Darker side of the Guangzhou

•June 22, 2013 • 1 Comment

Villages in the city, Cheng Zhong Cun, are a special phenomenon of Chinese urban geography. Due to extremely fast urbanisation after 1970s there are about 139 villages caught between skyscrapers in Guangzhou. Many has already disappeared and more are torn down every year. Despite the bad living conditions in the Xiancun village many people remains since the government compensation for their property is not high enough. In the past there were several clashes between police and the villagers refusing to leave. Due to the dense constructions some streets in the village are as dark as night…

Dark side of the Guangzhou I.

•June 17, 2013 • Leave a Comment

Well dont want to be overdramatic, but it was actually dark when I came to Xaiobei – Chocolate city in Guangzhou. Why Chocolate? Because there lives most of the estimated 50.000 -200.000 Africans. I have to say that night market in Xiaobei was quite a sight… It felt like I have stepped in a movie… 34C, humidity, smoke of the bbqs, colorful stalls full of various plastic toys, clothes, shoes, Noolywood movies… small dark streets, telephone shops, barbers, african music… lots of well Africans but also Middle easterns , Xinjiang Chinese (muslims) – finally some mustached brothers…

Only regret that I have was fact that I had only one hour and only my pocket camera… But will return for sure…

Finally some new material on the blog after a long time…

2 weeks ago I had an opportunity to shoot couple of portraits of one of the most influential Chinese artists Ai Wei Wei for a Croatian magazine – Globus.

Interesting interview and a patient model… I have manage even to make couple of 3D photos  and a cinematograph…
